Utility Rate Setting Across Several States

Problem: As part of its due diligence for an acquisition of a utility operating in several states, a client’s investment research analyst came to Public Insight for assistance in understanding how utility rates are set in Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, and Washington.

Solution: Public Insight facilitated consultations between our client and several former state-level elected and regulatory officials within each state (two of whom were the most recent former governors) who were able walk our client through the rate process.

Outcome: Our client received substantive background on how the state-level rate-setting commission is appointed, and the politics guiding prior decisions, and thus mitigated risk in their investment decision-making.
